U-Strip Transdermal Drug Delivery System

How Dermisonics’ Ultrasound Technology Works - Dermisonics uses what’s known as Active Transdermal Technology. That is, there are two different types of transdermal (or through the skin into the bloodstream) delivery systems:

  • Passive – In passive transdermal systems, the drug diffuses through the skin where it can act locally or penetrate the capillaries for systemic effect. This technology is only effective with small molecule drugs such as in nicotine patches.

  • Active – In active transdermal systems, drug molecules are forced through the skin. By using an applied force (such as ultrasound or an electrical current), active transdermal systems are capable of delivering proteins and other large molecule formulations through the skin and into the bloodstream.

DMSI has turned the technology into a simple treatment device: the U-Strip™ Based on a revolutionary integration of microelectronics and ultrasonic science with a product-carrying patch, the U-Strip system represents a quantum leap forward in non-invasive, transdermal delivery technology. It uses alternating ultrasonic waveforms to enlarge the diameter of pores, enabling large molecule drugs, such as insulin, to permeate through the skin (Stratum Corneum) into the dermis through the sweat pores and then into the bloodstream. Ultrasound Sawtooth Waveforms enlarge the pore to enable large molecules to penetrate the skin, then Ultrasound Square Waveforms push the drug through the expanded pores into the dermis and finally into the bloodstream.

The U-Strip is made up of:

  • The Medi-Cap is a new form of transdermal patch to hold the drug.

  • The Ultrasonic Applicator consists of a transducer device that generates ultrasonic transmissions to dilate the pores enabling large molecule drugs such as Insulin to enter the blood stream and a keypad to operate and control the dosage level and frequency.  The system is worn by the patient and is totally portable.

  • Programmable System - The Dose Controller contains a miniature battery and circuitry that precisely controls the rate, dosage, and pattern of drug delivery through the skin.  The user or his physician will be able to program the unit to provide for multiple dosage levels so that, for example, in the case of diabetics, the device could be programmed to deliver additional insulin during mealtime.

  • Dose Report for Physician - The ultrasonic applicator unit will record the dose delivered and store the information in memory for 60 days.  It is capable of downloading, via modem; a dose report to the physician to enable individualized dose tracking and individualized dose management.
